Pharmaco-epidemiology students can select electives from the following list of recommended courses. They have, however, complete freedom in choosing their electives in consultation with the coordinator.

Description of required master courses first and second year:

(3 ECTS) Medical Statistics (prof. E.R. van den Heuvel)
The course is intended to refresh and deepen basic knowledge on basis statistical methods for the analysis of data from health care research project. Emphasis will be given to the interpretation and understanding of these statistical methods. To support the statistical calculations the software package SPSS will be used. 

(8 ECTS) Basics in medicine (dr. H. Groen)
The Basics in Medicine course covers the major areas of clinical practice, and focuses on the major disease groups. Topics include internal medicine, genetics, immunology, infectious diseases, neurology and psychiatry. Medical doctors and clinical specialists will present interactive lectures and case studies. Students will learn about symptoms and physical signs of major diseases. They will be introduced to the clinical practice of generating differential diagnoses.

(5 ECTS) Pharmacoepidemiology UK (Prof. E. Hak)
 In this course the basic concepts of epidemiology including measures of frequency and associations, research focus as etiology, diagnostics, prognostics and intervention, study designs and data-analyses will be covered. Specific topics include, but are not limited to:
- observational drug intervention studies versus clinical trials;
- sources of clinical (prescription) data and pro- and cons;
- pro and cons of study designs (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional);
- validity and precision;
- statistical aspects to deal with uncertainty in pharmacoepidemiology;
- causal versus predictive research and criteria of causality;
- basics of pharmaco-economics.
This course is based on the third year BSc Pharmacy course Farmacoepidemiologie. Students who successfully passed this course during their bachelor programme shall include an extra 5ECTS elective in the masters programme. 

(4 ECTS) Advanced topics in Pharmacoepidemiology (prof. E. Hak)
Different topics will be covered including demographic techniques (life table analysis), diagnostic and prognostic research, confounding and effect modification, clinical trial methodology, meta-analysis, drug utilization research. 

(5 ECTS) Pharmacoepidemiology In Practice (Dr. Schuiling-Veninga)
The course is aimed to gain more in-depth knowledge in the pharmaco-epidemiology, basic methods of pharmacovigilance and database research. To learn and understand issues of confounding and effect modification  as well as the basics of multivariate statistical techniques to adjust for confounding. To practice with the IADB pharmacy research database and to learn pros and cons of using the database. To gain knowledge on the oral and written presentation of epidemiological research. The course further deals with the practical aspects of collecting and using relevant information about adverse effects, but we also discuss the organization of pharmacovigilance as well as topical subjects of pharmacovigilance.

Students will gain the latest insights into the Drug Development process. Students will acquaint themselves with research strategies within Drug Development. They generate knowledge and the position of the different expertise fields in Drug Development.
